CALDWELL ATHLETIC BOOSTERS MEETING and ELECTION OF OFFICERS

The 2011-12 school year is fast approaching and it could be a financially challenging year for extra curricular activities in our school district due to state budget cuts. The Athletic Booster Club is looking to grow its membership and hopes to elect a board with fresh new ideas, which will allow our athletes to experience a exciting, educational year of competition.

We would like to welcome and are encouraging everyone with an interest in CHS and CMS athletics to attend the July monthly meeting on Monday, July 11, 2011 at 6:30pm in the CHS Commons, election of officers will be held. There are several board members that will not be returning. The financial stability of the athletic booster club is dependent on its volunteers, membership, and officers who attend monthly meeting.

Caldwell Athletic Booster Club is a non-profit organization which supports all CHS and CMS athletes.

SBAN Alert: Critical Bills Up for Hearing on Tuesday

Please call all of the members of the Senate Education Committee by Monday at 5 p.m. to ask them to support Senate Bill 468 (Shapiro) and Senate Bill 443 (Patrick). These two bills would implement most of the statutory changes that school board trustees and superintendents have requested from their legislators.

Both of these bills eliminate costly state mandates on school districts.
Most of the changes proposed in these bills will help school districts reduce personnel costs and save jobs.
Allowing districts to save jobs is not only good for students, and good for the local community, it is also necessary to preserve the Teacher Retirement System’s (TRS) retiree health insurance program.
Feel free to highlight any of the issues addressed in either bill that would provide significant relief for your district. But, please highlight the importance to all districts of one of the provisions in SB 486 (Shapiro) that would permanently move the deadline for providing notice of contract nonrenewal from the current deadline (45-days before the last day of instruction) to 10 days after the last day of instruction. This change is necessary on a permanent basis (not just for the next school year) because:
The current 45-day deadline is not in the best interest of students; it falls in mid-April when students are taking state tests;
The current 45-day deadline is not in the best interest of teachers because it forces districts to make personnel decisions before getting student test scores back and before supervisors have completed teacher appraisals; and
The 45-day deadline forces school boards to make personnel decisions before districts can hold a tax rate election (these elections can only be held on the November or May uniform election dates); therefore, districts often do not know in mid-April how much revenue they will have available for the next school year.

SB 468 (Shapiro) -- As filed, this bill would make the following statutory changes on a permanent basis to give districts additional managerial and financial flexibility:
Moves the deadline for providing notice of contract nonrenewal to 10 days after the last day of instruction;
Removes the prohibition against reducing educator salaries below 2010-11 levels (NOTE: the committee substitute will make this take effect beginning in the 2011-12 school year, not in the 2012-13 school year as indicated in the bill as filed);
Removes the 10:1 class size limit for accelerated instruction classes in grades 3-8;
Removes the state mandate that school districts implement an Integrated Pest Management program;
Removes the commissioner’s discretion to limit the number of courses a student enrolled in a school district or open-enrollment charter school may take through the state virtual school network; and
Removes the requirement that a board publish a second notice or call a second meeting if the district’s effective tax rate decreases subsequent to the publication of the first notice.
We understand that a committee substitute for SB 468 would further add the following permanent flexibilities for districts:
Voids a teacher’s contract if the teacher fails to fulfill certification requirements in a timely manner;
Removes retired-rehired teachers from the state minimum salary schedule and the chapter 21 contract mandates; and
Limits the administration of the Fitness Gram during high school to only those students enrolled in a PE course or a course for PE credit.
Finally, the committee substitute for SB 468 will also apparently add the following flexibilities for districts on a temporary basis (i.e., for the next two school years):
Provides districts the ability to furlough employees for up to seven (non-instructional) days for the next two school years;
Suspends the state’s financial accountability system (FIRST) and the early warning system for the next two school years; and
Extends the telecommunications discount for the next two school years.

SB 443 (Patrick) -- As filed, this bill would give districts the following managerial and financial flexibilities:

Make it easier and less costly to terminate the contract of an employee who has been convicted of certain felonies;
Replace the 22:1 elementary class size limit with a 21:1 district-wide average to for grades K-4;
Eliminate the requirement that 8th grade students must take the Math and English Language Arts STARR tests if the student is taking the Algebra I and English I end of course exam. (This is not clear from the filed version of the bill, but will be in a committee substitute.);

Make it optional rather than mandatory for a district to offer a bi-lingual pre-k program; and

Extend the academic freedoms offered by the “excellence exemptions” to recognized campuses and districts; currently, these are only available to “exemplary” campuses and districts.

Education Funding - Budget Crisis Ahead

The protective bubble that shielded public schools from the full force of Texas' budget crisis has evaporated.

School districts are being told they should expect to get an estimated $3 billion to $5 billion less in the next two-year budget as lawmakers begin wrestling with a $24 billion revenue shortfall in January.

That could mean less money for prekindergarten classes, teacher incentive grants and tutoring for students struggling to pass the state's standardized tests.

And the state, in a highly unusual move, could also take a chunk out of the $37 billion Foundation School Program, which provides the direct per-student state aid to school districts.

"Going into the Foundation Program at this point ought to be a glaring red flashing warning about how serious this problem is," said state Rep. Donna Howard , D-Austin, who brought in a school finance expert on Tuesday to meet with several area school district representatives about the looming cuts.

Public education made up more than 40 percent of the state's $87 billion general revenue budget approved for 2010-11.

Much of that education money has been exempt so far from different rounds of budget cuts, in part because slashing funding for the one area that touches most voters' lives can be politically perilous.

But with the Nov. 2 election in the rearview mirror, there has been a greater acknowledgment among decision-makers that they cannot substantially reduce state spending without reducing school funding. Texas pays for its schools with a combination of state aid, local property taxes and some federal money.

Legislative leaders, who have vowed to close the budget shortfall without raising taxes, have not said whether they plan to cover the $2 billion school districts are projected to need for new students.

Senate Finance Chairman Steve Ogden , R-Bryan, said no decisions have been made about how to cut the state's public education budget.
But one of the ideas being kicked around is to eliminate $2 billion in grant programs from outside the Foundation School Program, which includes the $400 million teacher incentive program and more than $200 million for prekindergarten.

No one is eager to raise local property taxes to make up for losing state revenue, said Mark Williams , president of the Austin Independent School District Board of Trustees.

"We're getting to the point now that we will have to impact classrooms," Williams said.

In Central Texas, schools every year deal with more students, many of whom are low-income or are learning English, and help them meet the higher academic standards set by the state, said Pflugerville school district Trustee Vernagene Mott . And now they will be expected to do so with less money, she said.

But Talmadge Heflin of the Texas Public Policy Foundation, a conservative think tank, maintains that school districts are top-heavy operations that can cut expenses without affecting the classroom.

Even as the state has committed more to education, student performance has remained essentially flat, Heflin said.

"It makes the point that just putting money into education is not going to do the job," said Heflin, a former chairman of the House Appropriations Committee.

Williams said the criticism about top-heavy administrations might have been true in the past. But in Austin today, the $17 million administrative budget makes up 2 percent of the district's general operating costs.

"If we eliminated 100 percent of it, it still is not enough," Williams said, noting that the district expects a $35 million deficit next year with the anticipated state cuts.

Both sides seem to agree on one thing, however.

If legislators are going to provide school districts with less money, they need to cede some control and lift mandates they have imposed on the districts.

"Should the state undertake that option, they need to look at giving schools greater flexibility to deal with their budgets," said Dale Craymer , president of the business-backed Texas Taxpayers and Research Association.

In observation of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, this Friday all game ball ticket proceeds from the volleyball and football games will be donated to Susan G. Komen Walk for a Cure the local team Soul Sisters 4 Life in Memory of Rhonda Trahan.

Varsity Football is now 6-0 with a 1-0 district record. The Hornets defeated Smithville last week 59-41. This Friday will be a big game for the Hornets as they host district rival Giddings game time is 7:30. All Hornet fans plan to pack the stands and cheer the Hornets on to VICTORY!!!

JV Football last Thursday the JV Hornet Football team hosted Smithville for the opening of district 23-3A play. The Hornets held on to win the game 12 to 8. Defensively Redman Ward had an interception that would stop the Smithville tigers from scoring and Jake Payonk had an interception that would set up the Hornets go ahead touchdown. The Tigers would score once in the 1st half, but then the Hornet defense would shut them down after that. Defensively Tyler Fowler, Michael Privitte, Colt Charanza, Dakota Porter, Jake Payonk, Tanner Luna, Jorge Avalos, Dylan Drgac, Tyler (Bull) Sandners, Chris Luna, and James Teakell did an outstanding job of keeping the Tigers out of the end zone the 2nd half. Offensively Jorge Balleza scored both touchdowns, on a 1 yard run and a 3 yard run. The PAT’s would fail. Offensively in the second half the offensive line had key blocks to secure the win. The JV Hornets move to 4-1-1 on the year and 1-0 in district play. JV Hornets will travel to Giddings tonight to take on the Buffaloes, at 7:00 pm.

Freshman Football played Smithville last Thursday and lost 36-14. Tyler Houghton scored both touchdowns and Luke Noack followed the second touchdown with a 2 point conversion. Freshman travel to Giddings tonight, game time 5pm.

Varsity Volleyball-District record is 4-2 with loses to Giddings and LaGrange. The Lady Hornets have a very important match this Friday vs. Giddings. Game time for Varsity will be approximately 5:15pm. The Lady Hornets would like to see the stands packed, cheering loud, as they push for victory against Giddings.
JV Volleyball is currently 4-2 in district and have a very big match up against Giddings this week which is a must win!!! The ladies defeated Smithville last Friday in a very tough match by the scores 27-25, 25-27, and 25-22 and then defeated Rockdale this Tuesday by the scores 25-13 and 25-11. JV's Friday game time is 4:30.

Freshman Volleyball-Overall (11-10); District (4-2) Friday's Freshman game will begin at the conclusion of the Varsity match.

Cross Country Result-All cross country teams competed in Round Top-Carmine this past weekend in a very competitive meet. Team results are as follows: Varsity Girls finished 3rd, JV Girls 7th, JV Boys 3rd, MS Girls 3rd and MS Boys 2nd.

Arctic Weather Forecast Update #2

As expected the conference call and webinar this afternoon with the National Weather Service reinforced the cold weather aspects of the forecast while providing more detail on the precipitation possibilities during this event.

Just as detailed in this morning’s update the forecast for the next several days continues to include the affects of the strong arctic air mass settling in over all of Burleson County, including Caldwell, Snook and Somerville, early Thursday morning. The National Weather Service is certain that this will bring significantly colder air temperatures. There is still a slight chance that we could see rain mixing with sleet and changing into snow late Wednesday night throughout Thursday morning. They are not anticipating that we would see this in our area due to the extreme cold associated with the front.

They are still very adamant that the arctic air will keep both daytime and nighttime temperatures at or below freezing for at least the 48 hour period beginning early Thursday morning through Saturday morning. While they call for temperatures to be above freezing for 4 or 5 hours on Saturday afternoon, the temperatures could fail to rise above 32 degrees until Sunday afternoon.

These cold temperatures will be accompanied by sustained winds of 25 miles per hour and gust near 30 mph. These winds and cold temperatures will mean dangerous wind chills in the single digits both Thursday and Friday nights. Remind your people that at these temperatures frostbite can easily occur in minutes to exposed skin. Burleson St. Joseph Hospital is aware of the coming conditions and has made suitable arrangements to handle these types of injuries, should they occur.

Caldwell Athletic Booster club is looking for gameball sponsors for the 2009-10 girls and boys basketball season.

There will be a player autographed basketball raffled at each hometown district basketball game during the 2009-2010 season for boys and girls. Ball Sponsor for that game night will be announced prior to the start of the Freshman, JV, and Varsity games. Raffle tickets will be sold at the door for $1 each. A drawing for the ball will be held during the break between the 3rd/4th quarter of the Varsity game. Must be present to win.

Game 1 – Tuesday 12/1/09 @ CHS vs. Giddings

CHS – 48 / Giddings – 67

Hornets led by Seniors Andrew Smisek & Justin Ellard, both with 11 points. Sophomore Nathan Rodriguez added 10 points. Senior Andrew Smisek had a double-double by getting 10 rebounds to go with his 11 points & added 3 assists, 1 block, & 1 charge for the complete stat line. Junior Billie Daniels led the team with 4 assists. Coach Kevin Smisek says that Smisek & Junior Kedrin Sheppard graded out the highest for the game. “It was a typical 1^st game for us. We only had the footballers for 1 practice before the game, so they are, obviously, not in basketball shape. It will take some time for them to get their basketball legs. I was a little disappointed that we missed so many passes and simple basketball things. The kids in our basketball off-season program played well. Once again we must emphasize that our student-athlete’s play basketball throughout the year, not just during basketball season…if this continues, our basketball program will never get any better! I was also pleased with the play of Sophomore Robert Vychopen. He’s a young buck, but has the drive, desire & want to. He’s going to be a really good basketball player.

Game 2 – Thursday 12/3/09 @ Lorena Tournament vs. Summit Christian (Cedar Park)

CHS – 37 / Summit Christian – 72

Senior Andrew Smisek gets his 2^nd double-double in as many games by getting an identical stat line of 11 points, 10 rebounds, 2 steals, 1 assist, & 1 charge. Junior Kedrin Sheppard gets the 1^st double-double of his career by scoring 10 points & added a game-high 11 rebounds, to go with his 3 steals. Coach Kevin Smisek said that “we came out flat & never recovered from a good shooting team”. We have to get better at handling the ball and controlling the tempo of the game.

Game 3 – Friday 12/4/09 @ Lorena Tournament vs. Salado

CHS – 30 / Salado – 74

Senior Andrew Smisek is the only Hornet to score in double figures, getting a game high 14 points on 4 of 5 shooting from the 3 point line & adds 7 rebounds to go with 6 steals & 2 assists. Sophomore Nathan Rodriguez chipped in 6 points to go with his team leading 3 assists in a dismal performance by CHS. When you only shoot 33% from the FT line & go 10 of 36 from the field (28%), it’s hard to win a game of H-O-R-S-E, much less a Varsity basketball game. “We are still early in the season. These kids had a strong end to last season & a good solid spring & summer; we’ll see how we improve throughout the season. We’ll keep plugging along & working hard. These kids work very hard during the season & I’m pleased with their effort, but that’s not enough to win games.

Game 4 – Saturday 12/5/09 @ Lorena Tournament vs. Gatesville

CHS – 29 / Gatesville – 45

Although the Hornets did not have a player score in double figures, we finally had a balanced scoring line. Led by Sophomore Nathan Rodriguez with 7 points, the Hornets had 2 players with 6 points, Senior Justin Ellard and Junior Billie Daniels. They were followed by Senior Andrew Smisek with 5 points & Sophomore Robert Vychopen with 4 points. Vychopen also had a team-high 6 rebounds. Smisek added 4 assists. Coach Kevin Smisek said that we are forced to limit the other teams possessions by slowing the game down. We are surprisingly young again this year, after losing 3 Senior of last year’s team. The game will slow down eventually, but in our district, we need to get better very quickly or else it’s going to be another long season.”

Coach Smisek said “I appreciate our young men and all the student-athlete’s in the basketball program. I want to get this thing turned around with the outstanding young men who want to be a part of the basketball program, as well as the other programs in our community & at our HS. I’m grateful for all these young men. The 2009-2010 Caldwell Varsity boys basketball team consists of Seniors, Justin Ellard and Andrew Smisek; Juniors Billie Daniels, Anthony Gutierrez, Le’Darion Jenkins, and Kedrin Sheppard; and Sophomores Nathan Rodriguez, Robert Vychopen, and William Deere.

Friday Night the Hornets defeated Cleveland 20-13 to claim the Area Championship.

The Hornets play Carthage Friday, November 27, in Corsicana, at Corsicana High School's Tiger Stadium. Caldwell is the visiting team. Kick Off is set for 7:30 pm.

The Habys and Woolverstons are planning another great Hornet tailgate beginning at approximately 5:30 pm on the visitors side of the stadium. All friends and Hornet Fans are welcome to share in the fun and fellowship prior to the start of the big game. Everyone plan to come out and support the Hornets as they continue to make their mark on Hornet Football history.
Here are two different sets of directions. The mileage is almost exactly the same. It is about a 2 hr. 20 min. drive from Caldwell.

DIRECTIONS: To Corsicana's Tiger Stadium, 4001 FM 744, Corsicana, TX 75110. From Caldwell Hwy 36 North to Milano; Slight Right onto Hwy 190/79 travel 21 miles to Hearne; In Hearne take the US 79 N/TX 6 N ramp toward Franklin/Waco; Turn Left onto US 79/TX 6 and continue to follow US-79 for 1.9 miles; Turn slight left onto US-79E continue on US-79 for 51.3 miles; Take I-45 North toward Dallas for 50 miles;----(At this point you will exit prior to getting into Corsicana to avoid traffic) Take Exit 228A toward 15th Street; Turn left onto 15th Street go 0.1 miles turn right to stay on 15th Street and go 1 mile; turn left onto FM709/Spikes Rd. go 2.5 miles; turn Right on FM 2555 travel 5 miles; turn left on FM 744 end at stadium.

ALTERNATE ROUTE: This route will take you down 41 miles of OSR straight to I-45 avoiding all of the small towns from Milano to Buffalo on Hwy 79. This is also a good route expecially during the daytime. From Caldwell Hwy 21 through Cooks Point toward Bryan cross the Brazos River; after crossing river take second road to the left this is Hwy OSR travel 41 miles to I-45; Turn Left onto I-45 North to Dallas travel approx. 77 miles; ;----(At this point you will exit prior to getting into Corsicana to avoid traffic) take Exit 228A toward 15th Street; Turn left onto 15th Street go 0.1 miles turn right to stay on 15th Street and go 1 mile; turn left onto FM709/Spikes Rd. go 2.5 miles; turn Right on FM 2555 travel 5 miles; turn left on FM 744 end at stadium.

How proud are you to be a Caldwell Hornet Fan? For me, it is very exciting and fullfilling to be associated with such a great group of participants, coaches, and a community that supports its youth. Our support makes a difference in many young adults lives.

Football and Volleyball undefeated district champs, volleyball regional semi-finalists. If you have been one of the many Hornet Fans that has supported our playoff bound Hornets and Lady Hornets, you have seen first hand that these young men and women have more heart, desire, and will to win than your average athlete. The football team and volleyball team started their seasons as the underdog rebuilding after losing players to graduation. Until recently, area sports writers couldn't seem to recognize what Hornet fans have known all along, the Hornets are "The Real Deal".

Due to volleyball last Friday our family was unable to attend the Caldwell vs. Cameron football game; however, I was getting updates during the second half by text. It sounded like typical play hard, stay focused, we are champions Hornet football. It is great to hear fans say that was the best high school football game they have ever seen. Congratulations and keep "BRING'IN the STING!!!

Last night the Lady Hornet Volleyball team went into a playoff volleyball match as the underdog to 8th ranked Tarkington. If you were unable to attend, you missed the Lady Hornets as they stayed focused, played with their hearts, and showed their incredible desire to be Champions as they played a very smart team that played unrelenting defense. As always, Hornet fans never let up and encouraged the ladies to a nail-biting victory, defeating Tarkington in a 2-1/2 hour marathon match 16-25, 25-21, 23-25, 25-19, 19-17. Caldwell held off three Tarkington Match points in game five, with Senior, Blair Brinkman putting the kill away for the Hornets 19th point and match winner. Congratulations to the entire Lady Hornet Volleyball team, for a incredible job well done. Seniors: Blair Brinkman kill for match point, Melissa Cumby kill leader with 16, Vantasia Jackson incredible swings under great pressure and never let up, Taylor Noack dig & dig & dig again, Natalie Schielack serve it up again & again, Marissa Martinez, Mariah Patterson, and Emily Surovik. Juniors: Sondra Flippin a blocking machine that kept #3 in check in game 5, Callee Normanhere comes the drop curve serve, Lee Ann Simpson high flying kills from the outside, Sophomores: Allison Alford helped build the blocking wall against #3 and set to kill, Mariah Landolt spark plug that set to kill, Ashlee Hollis she's a gold digger, Kendall Holub, Julynn Clayton and Kara Ihlenfeldt. Coaches Jane Anne Giese, Allison owes you a new clip board, Wendy Weiss and Brandy Dahir.

WAY TO GO Lady Hornets!!!! This win advances the team to the Regional Tournament. The semi-final match will be Friday, November 13 against Carthage at Bryan High School at 6:00 pm. Hornets - Volleyball District Champs

Lady Hornet Volleyball finishes district play with all three teams UNDEFEATED DISTRICT CHAMPIONS!!!!

Last night, fans packed Hornet gym for three matches of exciting play. The Lady Hornet's showed how well they can "Bring the Sting". Play started with Freshman girls who have shown great improvement from week to week and finished the season by punishing Rudder by scores of 25-13, 25-14; concluding their season with an undefeated district record of 10-0.

JV had an exciting match against the Rangers. The Lady Hornet's went into the match knowing that they had to beat Rudder to be outright district champs. The only lost Rudder had prior to last night was to us during the first round of play. The Lady Hornets defeated Rudder in game one 25-17 and gave Hornet fans their money's worth in game two. Game two the score was point for point prior to the Lady Hornets getting down 19-22. It was then the Ladies pushed past the Rangers with a determined defensive and offensive effort winning game two 25-23. The JV girls finished their season with an overall record of 19-6 and 12-0 in district.

Varsity Lady Hornets UNDEFEATED DISTRICT CHAMPIONS!!! 12-0 in district, 27-11 overall. The Lady Hornets let the Caldwell fans know from the start why they have not lost a district match this season and had only given up one game during district play. The ladies finished the season as LeeAnn Simpson paced us with 11 kills while Sondra Flippin added 8 of her own. Melissa Cumby tallied 12 digs and Allison Alford had 25 assists. Taylor Noack was a force from the service line as she racked up 9 aces. Games scores were 25-9, 25-17, 25-13. The Lady Hornets will play a warm-up match on Friday at 5:30 pm in Hutto. They have a bye for the first round of district and will play the winner between Bridge City and the loser of a district tie breaker between Splendora and Huffman. The first Hornet playoff match will be one of the following days November 5, 6, or 7. The location will be a neutral site possibly in the Spring or Conroe area.

Thanks to all Hornet fans for your continued support during our season. We encourage you to pack the gym, wear orange, and cheer loud at our upcoming playoff matches as the Lady Hornets continue to "Plow Their Way to State"!!!

Hornet Sports Update

VARSITY FOOTBALL: As Caldwell fans have known for weeks, the Hornets prove once again, Friday night, they are "The Real Deal." The hard hitting ground pounding Hornets defeated Rockdale 35-14. Applause to the Caldwell offensive line consisting of Zach Kelley, Trent Meckel, Jared Mathis, Sixto Banuelos, and Kyle Schwartz for sticking it to Rockdale making it possible for running back, Kystan Woolverton, to show the Tigers they could not handled him. D.J. Cumby connected with Zach Ondrasek and Anthony Guiterrez for two great pass receptions that complimented the Hornets running game. The Hornet defense had a steller four quarters of play holding Rockdale to a scoreless second half with only 15 offensive second half plays. Bryston Burns picked off a Tiger pass in the fourth to seal the deal for the Hornets. The Hornets are now 6-1 and 4-0 leading the 24-3A district race to the Championship. Come out this Friday to Hornet stadium and support the Hornets as they take on Taylor in a battle to stay unbeaten in district play. Seniors will be recognized prior to the start of Friday's game.

JV & Freshman Football results not available at time of print. Middle School football was off last week due to a cancellation by Rockdale, field condition.

VARSITY VOLLEYBALL: Last week the Varsity Lady Hornets solidified the district championship. A win this Tuesday will make them undefeated district champs. The girls locker room is going crazy right now as the Freshmen, JV, and Varsity are all undefeated in district play and hope to stay that way through Tuesday. The Varsity took matches off of Madisonville and Rockdale last week. At Madisonville, the Lady Hornets showed their versatility as Vantazia Jackson, Melissa Cumby, and Sondra Flippin each tallied 7 kills. Defensively, Callee Norman had 9 digs and the assist leader was Allison Alford with 23. At Rockdale, Sondra Flippin put on an offensive show with 16 kills on 26 attempts with no errors. Ashlee Hollis tallied 15 digs. Great passing and setting made the offense happen. The team continues to mature and improve with each match and are eagerly looking forward to playoffs. The Lady Hornets have scheduled a warm-up match at Hutto on Friday, October 30 at 5:30 pm. Please mark your calendars with the addition and be prepared to come support these young ladies at several matches. We will get you information as soon as we can for each playoff game. The Lady Hornets first round of playoffs will be on one of the following dates November 5, 6, or 7. Thanks for your continued support and GO HORNETS!!!

Seniors will be recognized prior to the start of the Varsity Match. Lets pack the house and show all Lady Hornet teams how proud the community is of their many accomplishments this season.

JV VOLLEYBALL: The Lady Hornets JV Volleyball team added two more district wins to their record this past week by defeating Madisonville in a two game match by the scores : 25-18 and 25-19 on Tuesday. The JV Lady Hornets had a well balance offense, LaResia Jackson 9, Julynn Clayton 6, and Kyrsten Dawson 3 kills each. Kara Ihlenfeldt led the defense with 10 digs and Casey Brinkman had 22 assists. On Friday the ladies defeated Rockdale in a two game match by the scores : 25-7 and 25-11. Casey Brinkman led servers with 8 aces. Julynn Clayton and Kendall Holub led hitters with 6 and 5 kills respectively. This brings the Lady Hornets overall record to 18-6 and 11-0 in district. The ladies play their final match this Tuesday at home against Rudder. This is a crucial match for the ladies since Rudder’s only loss thus far in district was to the Lady Hornets in the first round of district play. The ladies need this win to be undefeated in district and to be out right district champs.

FRESHMAN VOLLEYBALL: Currently 9-0 in district and looking to beat Rudder Tuesday, to finished their season undefeated. Friday's stats unavailable at time of print.

MIDDLE SCHOOL VOLLEYBALL: October 20 vs.Rockdale; 7B-Lost-19-25,18-25, Record 3-4; 7A-Won-25-21, 25-10, Record 5-3; 8B-Lost-18-25, 20-25, Record 2-5; 8A-Won-25-17, 25-4, Record 6-1; Final match for MS volleyball is tonight in Madisonville.

VARSITY CROSS COUNTRY: Varsity Girls finish 2nd at the District Cross Country meet held in Cameron this past Saturday. This qualifies the team for the Regional Meet held in Humble on November 7. Top runner for Caldwell was Sophomore, Casey Brinkman, who finished fourth with a time of 13:03. Other Hornet runners finished as follows: 8th Jerrika Rodriguez, 9th Pam Zboril, 19th Julynn Clayton, 25th Samantha Rodriguez, 26th Edith Torres and 31st Kara Ihlenfeldt. Varsity Boys finished 5th. Pedro Arguello led the boys with a 13th place finish and a time of 19:17. Remainig boys finished 19th J.J. Rodriguez, 26th Ryan Hilburn, 31st Wayde Chapman, 33rd Justin Ellard, and 34th J.T. Ashorn. Congratulation to Lady Hornet and Hornet Cross Country for a great District Finish. Good Luck at Regionals.

JV CROSS COUNTRY: JV Girls won the district Cross Country title. Runners finished as follows: 3rd Shannon Bishop with a time of 15:33, 5th Brittanie Hegnight, 7th Jenny Stifflemire, 8th Macey Foster, 9th Meagan Boell, and 11th Angel Perriko. Congratulations on your district championship. JV Boys finished 3rd at District Cross County Franciois Pagay led the JV team finished 4th with a time of 20:29. Other runners completing the race were 8th Blake Bean, 11th James Baldwin, 14th Victor Amaya, 16th Zach Aldridge, and 17th Josh Kitchens.

MIDDLE SCHOOL CROSS COUNTRY: Renae Rodriguez is District Champion for the girls middle school Cross Country Runners. Renae finished in 1st place with a time of 13:10. Other finishers included 4th Laura Romero, 8th Madison Homeyer, 11th Ally Borrego, 12th Cally Cruz, and 18th Ally Zvodney. The girls team finished in 2nd place overall. MS Boys finish as follows: 8th Caleb Reeves, 14th Estaban Nunez, and 15th Jessee Tucker.

Caldwell Athletic Boosters have purchased and provided cow bells to be used in support of our Hornet Athletic Teams. Athletic boosters will not be able to continue to provide these bells if they are not returned when requested, at the conclusion of our football games.

There is a considerable cost to purchase and paint these bells. We are hoping to be able to provide these bells at all upcoming Hornet sporting events where UIL rules allow for their use. Please be courteous and return the borrowed bells at the conclusion of each game. If bells are not returned, we will be forced to sell bells for $5.00 each to cover our cost, instead of loaning them to our great supportive fans.

VARSITY VOLLEYBALL: Caldwell has a huge match at home this Tuesday, October 13, against Cameron on Parent's Night. The Lady Hornets would like to challenge fans to pack Hornet gym, wear orange, cheer loud, and help use “BRING the STING” to Cameron. Game times are Freshman 5:00, JV 5:45, Varsity 6:30. The Lady Hornets are now 23-11 overall and 8-0 in district. We are currently leading the district with Cameron following at 7-1. Sondra Flippin is leading our offense with 216 kills for the season. Ashlee Hollis is leading the defense with 327 digs and Allison Alford is the assist leader as she has 431. The Lady Hornets swept Navasota Friday 25-9, 25-8, 15-15. Stat leaders for the match were Allison Alford 14 aces, 12 assists; Callee Norman 10 aces; Sondra Flippin 7 kills. All three Lady Hornet teams are currently undefeated in District and need your support to help them push past Cameron and keep their undefeated District Championship goal alive. VARSITY FOOTBALL: Caldwell (5-1, 3-0) Friday night's much anticipated game between Navasota and Caldwell was everything Hornet fans were hoping for and then some. Not just a win, but a shut out. It was most definitely a get down and dirty game of old school, hit hard, and grind out the yards football. Let's all give a high five to Caldwell's defense which held the high-flying Navasota Rattlers to 114 yards of total offense and sacked quarterback Kye Hildreth eight times. Yes, if you were not there to see it, that is correct eight times. Linebacker LaDarion Jenkins keyed the Caldwell defensive effort. Penetrating into Navasota's backfield the entire game, sacking Hildreth 4 times. Jenkins also recovered a fumble in the fourth quarter to give his offense a chance to seal the victory. The Hornets' offense got 136 yards and two TD's from running back Kyson Woolverton for a 14-0 victory in a pivotal District 24-3A matchup. The Hornets gained 242 total yards rushing while the Hornet's stellar defense kept the ball away from the Rattlers (5-1, 1-1). Nelson Scott chipped in 81 yards on 15 carries, and D.J. Cumby had three rushes for 15 yards for the Hornets.

Friday night's win is only one of a very tough 24-3A District schedule for the Hornets. The Hornets will take this week to turn their focus to another top notch 3A team Rockdale and prepare for the Tiger's large, brutal defense. Caldwell high school football will be off this Thursday and Friday and will travel to Rockdale on October 23rd.

2009 HOMECOMING QUEEN: Friday night Lucero Carreron was named the 2009 Hornet Homecoming Queen. Congratulations Lucero. Other queen candidates were Autum Hammons, Mary Beth Meckel, & Kerrian Lynete Wyatt. The Royal Court included 9th grade Duke and Duchess, Ethan Oliver and Stacey Norman; 10th grade Eugene Wisniewski IV and Grace Anne Dusek; 11th grade James Colby Morton and Hollie Lynn Chennault.

VARSITY CROSS COUNTRY: Girls cross country team finished fourth at the Cameron Invitational Meet on Sept. 28. Casey Brinkman finished third with a time of 13:26. JV VOLLEYBALL: Friday night the Lady Hornets improved their overall record to 15-6 and district record to 8-0 by defeating Navasota in a two game sweep. The ladies also defeating Rudder last Friday in a two game match by the scores: 25-19 and 25-21. Last Friday’s match was a big win for the ladies since Rudder was the only other undefeated team in district. The ladies also defeated Taylor this past Tuesday by the score 25-11 & 25-22.

FRESHMAN VOLLEYBALL: Record for season is 16-4 and for district is 8-0. The Freshman Lady Hornets defeated Taylor 25-6, 25-21; and shutout Navasota Friday in a two game sweep.

MIDDLE SCHOOL FOOTBALL: All teams played Navasota in Caldwell. 7th Grade B Team; Lost 0-22: 7B record is 1 – 4; Overall; 1 – 1 in District; 7th Grade A Team; Lost 12-26: Colton Lilie ran for two touchdowns. 7A record is now 2-3; 1-1 in District; 8th Grade B Team; Lost 8-14: Tyler Houghton ran for one touchdown. Braxton Haynes ran for one 2-point conversion. 8B record is 1-3 on the year, 1-1 in District. 8th Grade A Team; Won 32-0: Timothy Escalona ran for two touchdowns. Dylan Drgac and Tanner Luna each ran for one touchdown. Jake Payonk returned an interception 14 yards for one touchdown. Redmond Ward ran for one 2-point conversion. 8A record is 4-1 on the year. 2-0 in District. Middle School football will play Academy in Caldwell next Thursday, October 15thth, starting at 4:30 pm.

JV CROSS COUNTRY: Junior Varsity boys finished sixth with 146 points. Results included Francois Pagay 14th, 19:16; James Revilla 46th, 21:39; Blake Bean 53rd, 22:14; James Baldwin 54th, 22:15; Victor Amaya 57th, 22:27; Josh Kitchens 58th, 22:32 and Zach Aldridge 64th, 23:39. The Junior Varsity Girls who finished included Brittanie Hignight 16th, Angel Perkkio, 33rd; Meagan Boell 35th, and Jill Jaecks 51st. Results from this week’s meet not available.
MIDDLE SCHOOL CROSS COUNTRY: The middle school girls and boys cross country teams finished third and ninth respectively at the Cameron meet. Renae Rodriguez won First Place for the girls with a time of 13:03. It's amazing how much feedback I get from people that are so appreciative of this.

People...this is FREE technology. I am using a simple set up to keep people informed. I send text messages to Twitter that feeds facebook and a blog html widget that displays the twitter feed. I kept it simple and it's way cool. I know of one sponsorship that was sold because they found out about it via twitter and the blog.

Sean Carter to Visit CHS

The Brazos Valley Regional Advisory Council will be sponsoring a speaking engagement at Caldwell High School for Sean Carter on Wednesday, Sept. 30th at 2:00 p.m.

In 2005 at the age of 21, Sean suffered a traumatic brain injury after a vehicle in which he was riding struck a tree. The driver of the vehicle was drunk, yet he walked away from the accident. Sean was left unable to walk or talk. With the aid of a special wheelchair and computer, Sean can "stand" and "speak" about the events that changed his life forever. Since that time, Sean and his mother have welcomed the opportunity to deliver his special message. His story has been featured in newspapers and on TV throughout northeast Texas.

Hornet Sports Update

High school sports are in full swing.

Varsity Football: If you missed the football game on Friday, you missed an exciting game. The Hornets pulled within two late in the fourth quarter and attempted to tie the game with a two point conversion with 3:36 left to play. Final score 26-28 Bellville. Kysan Woolverton led the Hornets with 23 carries for 132 yards rushing and three touchdowns. D.J. Cumby was 7 for 12 with 104 yards and a touchdown, and kicker Trent Meckel was 2 for 3 on PATs. Woolverton also averaged 37 yards on two kickoff returns. The Hornets will be traveling to Sheppard this Friday game time is 7:30pm.

Freshman and JV football will be playing in Caldwell this Thursday beginning at 5:30pm. The Hornets Nest located at Hornet Stadium will be open from 5-8:00 for your spiritwear & membership purchases.

CHS Cross Country ran at Bellville Saturday. The girls team finished 2nd and boys team finished 4th. This was their first meet of the season and all competed well. They will be traveling to San Marcos to compete this Saturday.

Congratulations Varsity Volleyball on another great weekend of play. They finished 2nd in the Robinson Volleyball tournament with their only loss being to Crawford two games to one in the Championship match. The ladies had very exciting wins against Lampasas and Robinson, 2008 3-A Regional Semifinalist. Sophomore, Allison Alford was selected to the All-Tournament Team. The Lady Hornets went 6-1 for the weekend and have an overall record of 13-11.

After a very slow match again Elgin on Tuesday, the ladies have turned up their play significantly. They have some of the best ball control and defense we have seen in Caldwell for many years. After three weeks of travel, the volleyballers will be playing at home tonight vs. Waller. Games times are Freshman 5, JV 6, and Varsity 7:15. They will also be playing at home this Friday vs. Bellville, game times JV 4:30, Varsity 5:30, Freshman 7:15.

The Lady Hornets JV volleyball team Defeated Elgin last Tuesday night in a three game match by the scores: 25-16, 21-25, and 25-23; and then lost to A&M Consolidated Friday by the scores of 19-25, and 12-25. Although the ladies lost to Consolidated, they fought hard and played very good defense through out the match. These matches set the ladies record at 4-3 for the year.

Freshman volleybal defeated Elgin on Tuesday and travel to A&M Consol on Friday where they lost 0-2. Their record is 4-3.

Caldwell Athletic Booster Club will be meeting tonight, Monday, August 24, at 6:00pm in the Caldwell High School staff workroom. Topics of discussions will include Fall Sporting Events, Booster Club Duties at hometown football games, Discount Cards, Memberships and Sponsorships.

Caldwell Athletic Booster Club is a non-profit organization which supports all Caldwell High School & Middle School athletes. Caldwell has well over 250 athletes. The athletic booster club is hoping to grow its group of active members for the upcoming school year. The Caldwell Athletic Booster Club has the following Sponsorships available for purchase. All sponsorship money goes directly to the Athletic Booster Club. Proceeds will be used to purchase items for the middle school and high athletic department.

Sponsorships are as follows:

H-O-R-N-E-T-S (Flag Sponsorships) $125.00 per letter for the 2009 Football Season. Sponsors name will be displayed on the Flag Sponsor Sign located on the Football Field near cheerleaders at all home and away football games. Sponsors will receive a Sponsor T-shirt and will be listed in the Friday Football Program insert and athletic banquet program.

Second Clock Sponsorships are $125.00 for the 2009 Football Season.
Sponsors name will be displayed below the second clock located in the end zone at Hornet Field. There will be no more than two sponsors per clock. Sponsors will receive a Sponsor T-shirt and will be listed in the Friday Football Program insert and athletic banquet program.

Inflatable Hornet Helmet (Only one Sponsorship) available for $250.00 for the 2009 Football Season. Sponsors name will be displayed on a Sponsor Sign located on the Football Field prior to and during the running through of the Hornet Football Team at each home and away football game. Sponsors will receive a Sponsor T-shirt and will be listed in the Friday Football Program insert and athletic banquet program.

Volleyball Game Ball Sponsors $50.00 for one 2009 home town district volleyball match.
Six (6) Game Ball Sponsors needed. Tickets will be sold for $1 each to purchase a chance to win a volleyball signed by the 2009 Lady Hornet Volleyball Team. The Sponsor will be announced prior to the start of the Freshman, JV, and Varsity district volleyball matches. Sponsors will receive a Sponsor T-shirt and will be listed in the Friday Football Program insert and athletic banquet program.

Volleyball PA Sponsor $100.00 for three home district volleyball matches.
Each sponsor will be announced prior to the start of three Freshman, JV, and Varsity volleyball matches. Need two (2) sponsors. Sponsors will receive a Sponsor T-shirt and will be listed in the Friday Football Program insert and athletic banquet program.
